Following up from last week's post, I want to share the elderberry syrup recipe that I use. Quick, easy, and much cheaper than from the store (with less ingredients too!)
I buy dried elderberries from Starwest Botanicals - I know elderberries grow wild here in northwestern Montana but I have not been able to find them unfortunately! If you know of a tree and wouldn't mind sharing the location, please let me know :)
3 c filtered water
1 c dried elderberries
1/2 c raw local honey
A dash of ginger
A dash of cinnamon or 1-2 sticks
Bring to boil the water, elderberries, ginger, and cinnamon. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Completely let it cool to room temperature. Add the honey and mix well. Store in the fridge.
Preventatively I have my family take 1 tsp a day. If they are having symptoms of some kind, I up the dose to 3-4 tsp.
This particular bag of elderberries makes me about 3 batches total, for reference.
