Postpartum Chiropractic Care

Why Chiropractic Care Matters After Birth

Childbirth asks an incredible amount of your body — and recovery doesn't stop at your six-week checkup. Between nine months of postural changes, the physical demands of labor and delivery, and the new (and constant) work of caring for a newborn, your spine, pelvis, and nervous system are often left out of alignment long after your baby arrives.

Postpartum chiropractic care is about helping your body recover the way it's meant to. Rather than simply masking pain, adjustments address the underlying imbalances left behind by pregnancy and birth, so your body can heal fully instead of compensating indefinitely.

Common Symptoms After Pregnancy

New motherhood comes with its own set of physical challenges, and many women don't realize how many of them are connected to spinal and pelvic misalignment. Common postpartum symptoms we see include:

  • Lower back and pelvic pain

  • Sciatica or nerve-related leg pain

  • Neck and shoulder tension from feeding and carrying baby

  • Rounded, hunched posture from nursing or bottle-feeding

  • Wrist and hand discomfort from lifting and holding

  • Headaches

  • Core and pelvic floor weakness

  • Fatigue and disrupted sleep

Many of these issues are dismissed as "just part of being a new mom." But ongoing pain isn't something you have to accept — research shows that new mothers often underreport postpartum pain, and even when they do speak up, it's frequently minimized rather than treated. It's worth addressing, and it can be addressed.

The Benefits of Postpartum Adjustments

Faster, more complete recovery. Chiropractic care helps correct the postural imbalances built up over pregnancy and childbirth — from the forward-leaning posture of late pregnancy to the hunched positions of feeding and holding a baby — so your body can heal instead of adapting around ongoing dysfunction.

Relief from pain without medication. Whether it's low back pain, pelvic discomfort, or sciatica left over from pregnancy, adjustments offer a safe, drug-free option, which is especially valuable for nursing mothers.

Improved pelvic and core function. Pregnancy and delivery can leave the pelvis unbalanced and the surrounding muscles and ligaments stretched or strained. Chiropractic care, often paired with pelvic floor and core rehab, supports better alignment and function as these structures heal.

Better posture for the demands of motherhood. Feeding, carrying, and lifting a baby all day place repetitive strain on the neck, shoulders, and back. Regular adjustments help correct posture-related imbalances before they turn into chronic pain.

Support for your nervous system. Sleep deprivation and the physical stress of new motherhood take a toll on the whole body. Chiropractic care has been associated with improvements in sleep quality and overall stress response, helping you feel more like yourself as you adjust to life with a newborn.

When to Start

While six weeks postpartum is the traditional benchmark for clearance from your OB, chiropractic care can often begin sooner, depending on your delivery and how you're feeling. For women who received prenatal chiropractic care, continuing into the postpartum period helps maintain the progress made during pregnancy. For those just starting, it's never too late — many women benefit from care months or even years after giving birth.

A Note on Safety

Postpartum chiropractors evaluate each patient individually, taking into account your delivery (vaginal or C-section), any complications, and your current symptoms before beginning care. If you experience red-flag symptoms after delivery — such as severe headache, vision changes, or sudden neurological symptoms — please seek emergency care right away, as these can occasionally signal something more serious than typical postpartum discomfort.

Recovering from childbirth takes time, support, and the right care. We're here to help you heal fully so you can feel strong, balanced, and present for this new chapter.
